About this site
This site presents the Śārṅgadharasaṃhitā of Śārṅgadhara, a Sanskrit treatise on medicine and pharmacy, together with two commentaries, in IAST (romanized, diacritic) transliteration.
The three texts
The root text is set in larger type at the full measure. Two commentaries follow it, each set smaller and indented behind a rule: Āḍhamalla’s Dīpikā and Kāśīrāma’s Gūḍhārthadīpikā. Each carries a small label at its head (Dī. for the Dīpikā, Gū. for the Gūḍhārthadīpikā), and each can be hidden independently with the controls at the head of a chapter.
In the source each comment already opens with its commentator’s abbreviation (dīpikā / dī0, gū0); this site uses those to tell the two apart, removes them, and supplies its own label in their place.
Editor’s notes
The source carries the editor’s notes (variant readings marked pā., remarks on the Calcutta printing, passages judged interpolated, etc.) embedded in the running text. Here they are numbered in the text and gathered at the foot of each chapter.
Source
The Sanskrit text is taken from text is drawn from Śāstrī, Paraśurāma, ed. 1931. 2 ed. Muṃbai. Nirṇayasāgara Press, transcribed by scholars at the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of Ayush, Government of India: http://ccras.res.in/ccras_ebooks/readSam. The CCRAS website is extremely well designed and implemented, and users are recommended to use it. The present, simplified derivative is created for long-term archival preservation, stability, and ease of local consultation.
Known limitations
- Occasional oddities of the source (e.g. a colon for visarga, stray spaces) are kept as found.
- If you notice missing or garbled passages, please compare against the original site and open an issue.
- A handful of comments in the source lack the abbreviation. Where their place in the sequence (the source gives the Dīpikā before the Gūḍhārthadīpikā) or a colophon naming the author settles the matter, they are assigned accordingly; two that remain uncertain (Uttarakhaṇḍa 3 and 4) are shown in commentary type without a label. One passage of root text misfiled among the comments (Uttarakhaṇḍa 11) has been restored to the root text, and a stray line from the Carakasaṃhitā at the end of Pūrvakhaṇḍa 7 has been omitted.
